The environment is here to stay, whether or not we are a part of this world is moot. It sustains us more than the economy does, even in another stock market crash it's possible to sustain yourself by farming or trading goods, you are less likely to survive if the environment gets destroyed.
I tend to think it can't, at least not true happiness and the peace that comes with it. Often times people get so materialistic, they want the biggest, best things to show superiority over others and sure they may find happiness for a time with it, but eventually it goes away and they need to work more to get more.
But then, if anyone would like to give me money I'd be happy to test this question out better! ;D
